A carer is a person who provides unpaid support to a partner, child, relative or friend who couldn’t manage to live independently or whose health or well-being would deteriorate without this help. This could be due to frailty, disability or serious health condition, mental ill health or substance misuse. Very often people do not recognise themselves as ‘carers’; they are just family members, friends or neighbours who find themselves in a caring situation, sometimes suddenly, sometimes gradually, and simply get on with what needs to be done. A carer may not always live with the person they care for, but their help may be essential in enabling that person to go on living independently.
